Africa to South America Information

Submitted by Klaas van der Meer

I had a detailed look again into the various options and respective cost for a RO/RO shipping from South Africa and/or Namibia to either Uruguay (Montevideo) and/or Argentina (Zarate) and can confirm as follows:

Namibia has no RO/RO service to South America. As a matter of fact Namibia is no option. At least, not for RO/RO shipping.

The best, cheapest and fastest shipping option is definitely shipping from Durban to Montevideo. The transit time is 15 days. The cost from free hand over of car up to CFR Montevideo is USD 5500.00 all in.

In Montevideo we have a very good and reliable agent that will help you to take your vehicle out of the port. The cost in Montevideo will be around USD 1000.00 (if you are lucky even less - in the USD 1000.00 the commission of our agent is already included which is a humble USD 200.00). Our agent will accompany you to the various offices and you pay the bills directly to the various entities. This way you don't have to pay any commissions to anybody i.e. all is net/net. You will be able to do everything in 1 day time if accompanied by our agent who has many good contacts at customs if you understand what I mean.

Furthermore, our agent's family has a parking lot/village close to Punta del Este (beach) which you can use for free if interested to spend some days at the seaside. An added value to our customers for free, though.

Zarate, Argentina could be an option but if I have a look at the cost and the transit time it doesn't really make sense, frankly speaking.  Transit time would be approx. 58 days (no direct call i.e. vessel operates via Bremerhaven, Germany) and the cost USD 7000.00 ++.
